Most employee surveys include a section where the respondent can add comments and/or suggestions in their own words. The write-in section is usually placed at the end of a survey and viewed as standard survey practice. The verbatim comments are often included in the client report and in some cases are broken out by business units/divisions. I think it is time for a change!

“I highly recommend Jean Douglas for work in communications and engagement surveys. She has an exceptional background in employee engagement work woven with a fine sensitivity to clients. We worked together on a project and I found that she was both effective and efficient as we created our proposal. She was very aware of specific needs and technicalities that could impact the services we planned to deliver. She was also very concerned that the client received value from us while also achieving results that were important to them. I trust that I will work with Jean Douglas in the future. She is a caring, thoughtful, and efficient person to partner with.”

Why should you do business with Jean Douglas? In my opinion the answer to this question can be captured in three short words: Jean delivers value. To elaborate, Jean has a broad depth of experience, expertise and insight that is not typical of the vast majority of business consultants out there. What Jean delivers is high quality work, on time and at the agreed price. Jean is one of Canada’s top data research and employee engagement experts. I’m confident she could help any business better understand the perceptions and attitudes of their people and help translate this knowledge into strategies, action and ultimately business success. Jean’s research techniques not only helped me build an employee communications program at Rogers Retail, but also sell more non-typical communications approaches to my senior management team. But the best thing about Jean is her super pleasant personality. I’ve never her seen her angry or frustrated when direction or timelines change. In fact it is just the opposite, she consistently brings a passion for people and excitement about helping her clients be successful.

"Jean has been working with us since 2007 on employee research projects and we are now in the process of conducting our third annual employee surveys. (We conduct two surveys a year, one for salaried and one for hourly employees.) She has done an excellent job on the design of the surveys, the analysis of the results, conducting post survey employee focus groups and, most importantly, reporting back to our executive with constructive feedback and recommendations voiced from a strategic perspective. She takes the data from the survey and delivers a message they can relate to. The feedback from our annual employee research is now an important element in developing our annual business plans and a key target results area."

We all keep hearing how the labour force is declining and immigration is the answer. Well, I disagree. We have a wonderful source of labour right here – our Aboriginal youth. The statistics are clear – in 2006, according to Statistics Canada, almost half of the Aboriginal (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) population was under 24 years of age (the aboriginal population, according to Statistics Canada, in 2006 was over one million). This has huge potential for the future workforce.

I have to admit, this has kept me awake at night. Colour me strange. But I cringe when I see statistics abused and misused; demographic information is a prime example.
